Clinton Foundation conference will be held Jan. 14 - 16 in La Quinta, prior to the Humana Challenge PGA Tour Golf Tournament
PALM SPRINGS – November 13, 2012 –Desert Regional Medical Center and JFK Memorial Hospital, through their parent company Tenet Healthcare, will be presenting sponsors of the 2nd Annual “Health Matters: Activating Wellness in Every Generation” conference, which is hosted by the William J. Clinton Foundation prior to the Humana Challenge PGA Tour Golf Tournament.
This year, the Clinton Foundation also announced the launch of the Clinton Health Matters Initiative (CHMI), a national health initiative that builds on the Clinton Foundation’s work on global health and childhood obesity. CHMI will work to improve the health and well-being of people across the United States by developing and implementing a variety of individual, systems and investment strategies.
The Coachella Valley and greater Little Rock in Arkansas will be the first two communities where CHMI will work to close the gap in health disparities and focus on underserved areas.
“We are proud to be the presenting sponsor of the Health Matters conference again this year, and excited by the possibilities that the Clinton Health Matters Initiative opens up for our community,” said Carolyn Caldwell, chief executive officer of Desert Regional Medical Center. “Last year’s conference resulted in some fabulous collaboration on childhood obesity issues in the Coachella Valley, and we look forward to working with the Clinton Health Matters Initiative in 2013.”
Following the inaugural Health Matters conference in 2012, Desert Regional convened two meetings with leaders from the three school districts in the Coachella Valley, the Desert Healthcare District, the FIND Food Bank and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, founded by the American Heart Association and Clinton Foundation, to discuss childhood obesity efforts. Following those meetings, and with the support a grant from the Desert Healthcare Foundation, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation placed a Healthy Schools Program Manager in the Coachella Valley to work with the schools on creating healthier campuses.
“As an acute care hospital, we provide highly sophisticated medical care for the seriously ill and injured, but that is just one part of the health care continuum,” Caldwell said. “To truly create a healthier community, we want to work with all our partners – from the business sector, the schools, nonprofit organizations and individual doctors and clinicians. We are fortunate to have some of the best medical care available right here in the Coachella Valley, but we also have some of the greatest needs. It will take all of us to make a difference.”
