Desert Regional Medical Center is the only designated trauma center between Riverside and Phoenix. It is designated Level II by California Emergency Medical Services.
The Richards Emergency Trauma Center, established in 1980, services a wide radius with borders spanning from Banning and Beaumont to the West, Imperial County to the South, the Arizona border to the East and Twentynine Palms and the high desert to the North.
The 24-hour Trauma Center, which receives about 1800 of the 62,000 emergency room visits annually, is staffed by dedicated trauma/ surgical critical care surgeons using some of the most advanced technology available.

Trauma Services consists of a dedicated operating room, the 8 bed Hanson-White Trauma Intensive Care Unit, and the 32 bed Sinatra Neuro/Trauma Pavilion.
