Hanson House

A home for families of critical patients

For over a decade, Hanson House has been providing temporary low- or no-cost housing for families of critically ill or injured patients. Originally a project of the Desert Healthcare Foundation, Hanson House Foundation, Inc. is now a freestanding not-for-profit organization. The eight-guestroom home is the Coachella Valley’s first and only hospital hospitality house. In addition to allowing family members to be close to their hospitalized loved ones, Hanson House helps reduce the cost of hotels, which could add to a family’s already heavy burden. This warm, friendly environment is designed to help people cope with the tremendous stress and emotional turmoil that accompanies critical illness and injury.

“At Hanson House, families are able to stay in a great facility within walking distance of the hospital while living with others experiencing a similar tragedy,” explains Dr. Frank R. Ercoli, medical director of Trauma and Critical Care Services at Desert Regional Medical Center and chairman of the Hanson House Foundation. “Hanson House provides an environment for families that is conducive to bonding and socializing with others in the same predicament.”

Dr. Ercoli spearheaded the Hanson House project while on the board of the Desert Healthcare Foundation. In early 2000, Dr. Ercoli brought the vision of Hanson House to the attention of Lord James Hanson, a part-time Palm Springs resident who became the project’s primary benefactor. More than $2.3 million was initially raised to make Hanson House a reality.

Hanson House is located on a dedicated parcel of land adjacent to Desert Regional Medical Center. Phase I of the 8,000-square-foot facility features several areas that provide services in addition to lodging. There are two RV spots, a community-style kitchen where families have the option of preparing their own meals or partnering with others to prepare group meals, indoor and outdoor dining areas, a social gathering room, a chapel, a physician/family conference room, business offices, laundry facilities, a reception area, and inspiration gardens with fountains and sitting areas for meditation.

An onsite manager, a staff of volunteers, social workers and clergy, handle the daily operations of Hanson House. The Board of Hanson House Foundation, Inc. oversees operations.
