Highlights of the Nurse Residency Program

Photo of Nursing Residency Program DRMC utilizes a collaborative interdisciplinary approach to help you launch your career as a nurse. Utilizing expert nurse educators, content experts, social workers, physicians, pharmacists, and more... our team will help you step out in confidence to be able to care for the most challenging patients.

You will spend the first 10-18 weeks (depending on clinical specialty) working with focused preceptors in the clinical area of hire, while also learning in the classroom and simulated settings. 

What are the requirements for the Nurse Residency Program at DRMC?

  • New graduates hired into the Nurse Residency program are required to have a BSN and a 3.5 GP
  • Must sign a 2-year commitment to remain within DRMC after the preceptorship ends. Many opportunities exist within DRMC for advancement during your career

How does the Residency Program at DRMC work?

  • Support from your Nursing Practice (NPP) Department
    • Your NPP team consists of a director, two media/administrative assistants, an online education coordinator / American Heart Training Center Coordinator, and 7 specially trained nurse educators.
  • Education and Curriculum
    • Residents attend core courses during the first weeks (days vary, classes are generally for six hours). In some cases, online courses through professional organizations are utilized, such as the 2016 Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (ECCO), or the core AORN curriculum. Classroom time will vary depending on specialty.
  • ​Clinical Experience with Preceptor
    • ​Residents complete clinical shifts with preceptors. As classroom time decreases, time with the preceptor increases. (Preceptorship time varies by specialty).
    • As part of your training, you will float to other areas to observe. This assists with your understanding of the patient's continuum of care assists you as you build relationships with staff members in other departments.
  • Helping You Gain Confidence and Efficiency
    • ​Our goal is to help you take your coursework and apply it in the real-world setting. Special teams will work with you throughout your residency period to help you grow and develop.
  • Evaluation
    • ​Residents will complete evaluations throughout the program
    • All data is regularly reviewed by DRMC leadership to continually improve the program
