Osteopenia refers to a bone mineral density that is lower than normal, but is not low enough to be considered osteoporosis. Having osteopenia puts a person at greater risk for bone fractures and for developing osteoporosis.


Osteoporosis is a condition that causes bones to become brittle and weak; this leaves them more susceptible to fracture. Women who are past menopause are at the highest risk for developing osteoporosis.
